Very nice mouse, but consider size before purchase, July 1, 2011

This is a solidly-designed mouse that works right out of the box. Other mice I’ve tested come with an ugly and bulky wireless receiver that you have to manually sync up by pushing a button on both units when changing batteries or after the mouse has been turned off. Not this one. The M305’s receiver is the size of a nickel and is barely noticeable once it’s plugged into a USB port. I tested it on my Mac Pro and Windows workstation and it worked as soon as the system recognized the receiver (about 5 seconds or so). There’s no software to install whatsoever. Just plug and play.

One immediate thing you will notice is that the tracking will be about 2-3x faster than your normal mouse! This happened on the Mac and the PC. Because of the resolution of the tracking sensor, your cursor will zoom across the screen and you may have to crank down the tracking speed through your computer’s system preferences.

Functionality and shape-wise, however, this is pretty much your father’s Oldsmobile. The “silver filament” design is rather corporate, safe, and uninspired, with a neither here nor there look that I didn’t care for, even though Logitech thinks it’s funky and creative. It really doesn’t stand out in a crowded mouse marketplace. If it was racing flames, that’d be really cool and eye-catching. Or even paisley. I do like the design of the battery cover though. On the underside is a button for “popping” the hood for the battery compartment and receiver storage niche. It’s spring loaded and really does pop like a car hood/trunk. Don’t try to pry it off like I first did.

Lastly consider the size. I find this mouse too small to be comfortable to hold for a long time, especially when using the scroll wheel. You might wish to consider the larger M310 if you’re male. My female coworker, however, loves this mouse.

Logitech can do no wrong (well, except for their Revue, but that’s a different story), and the M305 is another fine mouse from Logitech.

I have an ASUS netbook, and this goes perfectly with the netbook, sure beats using the touchpad.

    – Comes with a AA battery!
    – Long battery life
    – Nice, distinctive artwork and colors on mouse
    – Nano receiver
    – Installs immediately for usage

    – Setpoint software from website needs internet connection to install completely
    – Mouse attracts grease…

Logitech, as in many of their other wireless devices, generously provides an AA battery. I wasn’t sure if they would for the M305 given the lower price point, but they did. They claim a 6 month battery life, and there’s no reason to doubt that claim, as many of my other Logitech device have been rather parsimonious on battery power. The battery housing (top quarter of mouse) is accessible via a battery cover toggle switch underneath the mouse. Open it, insert battery as shown, close hatch.

I then plugged in the Nano receiver into a spare USB slot, and 2 seconds later, I was off and running. The mouse can be further configured by Setpoint driver software on Logitech’s website; I was a bit annoyed that the Setpoint software needed an internet connection to install, as my netbook was not near a wifi source at the time of installation. Great colors and artwork on the M305; it’s distinctive.

The only other detracting issue I can think of is that the M305 tends to attract grease…but maybe that’s my fault for eating and using the mouse at the same time. Overall, another great device from Logitech.

**UPDATE (September 1, 2011)**: I’ve been using the mouse for about 2.5 months now, and the battery is still going strong. It’s so much more convenient than using a touchpad! I also love the bright red color and unique styling; I know which desk is mine because when I approach from afar, only my desk has the little red Logitech mouse with cool styling. It’s been comfortable to use for hours on end, the size works well for me, but perhaps I have smaller hands.

**UPDATE (December 1, 2011)**: Battery just ran out. Estimated 6-month battery life surprisingly accurate!
