After auditioning several small speaker systems (Creative, Logitech, Sony and others), and reading lots of reviews on Amazon and CNET, I realized I had spent over 4 hours researching a $50 purchase. Which, let’s face it, is ridiculous. I’m also the kind of guy who will return a product if I don’t feel 100% comfortable with it. (I guess this passes for normal consumer behavior these days.) So I decided to take a deep breath and buy the T12s, which had sounded pretty good in the store. And you know what? They sound even better at home. The sound is natural and very musical. The sound stage is adequate for a home office, bedroom or an apartment living room. The bass is juicy and for 50 bucks I’m not going to worry too much about the midrange. I think they do quite well in reproducing acoustic instruments like solo piano and guitar. They are detailed enough to bring out the differences between a good recording and a bad one. No, they won’t make a low-fi MP3 file sound like a Japanese import CD, but then even my expensive floor-standing speakers won’t do that. My advice to you is not to over-think your purchase and get the T12s if you’re at all tempted. They’re absolutely worth a try.

Fine for casual listening, September 9, 2009

These 2.0 speakers are easy to set up, look classy (although I’d prefer a grill/cover instead of bare speaker cone) and are much more reasonably _sized_ for a desktop than the Gigaworks T20. The weight and feel of the volume knob does seem substantial. So fit and finish are a plus.

The overall sound is reasonably clean. The Bass Flex design gives it very minor kick, but don’t expect miracles. A comparably priced 2.1 system is probably going to be more pleasing for more types of listening. The highs actually seem slightly clipped to me vs other systems. Not terribly objectionable.

In short, if you are a casual listener that just wants some music in the background without much fuss, these will almost certainly be a nice upgrade to your laptop speakers or the cheapies that came with your PC.

If you want something more rich and enveloping, you’ll probably want a 2.1 (3 piece) system that’s not so compromised. Basically, better sound can be had for around the same price as these, as long as you can deal with the bass unit.

If you have a golden ear, or are very particular about audio quality, why are you even reading this review? :p

As a sidenote, this set breaks down/disconnects easily and so it’s a fairly portable system.

I decided to stick with Creative Labs after a good experience with an old pair of computer speakers that were included with my previous PC. I connected these T12s to my new iMac and they sound great! The glossy black finish and chrome power/volume dial are very nice touches. I like how accessible the Aux and headphone ports are in the front of the speaker. Setup was easy as well. These speakers don’t use USB connectivity so they don’t take up any of your USB ports, and you are able to use them on other gadgets such as ipods/MP3 players, Televisions, etc. I’m giving the speakers 4 stars because I would’ve liked for them to have the mesh cover over the domes…you’ll need to be extra careful in cleaning these.

Amazon shipped the speakers fairly quickly with free shipping, even though they were sent out USPS.
